Triggers in AppSignal: Already Powerful — Now Easy To Set Up 🚀

Setting up triggers within AppSignal is a powerful way to discover that the bits started hitting the fan. You can use triggers to get an alert if an error rate is higher than 1%, your server runs out of memory, or even if your hourly login drops to zero. Our latest update makes the creation of triggers much easier.

Previewing Graphs

The first improvement you'll see is the graph preview on the right side of the trigger form. It shows a preview of the data you're setting a trigger on. This makes it much easier to decide what threshold you want to set a trigger for.

Autocomplete for Custom Metrics and Tags

With AppSignal, you can track any metric you want and set a trigger on it. Previously, you had to manually type the name of metric during the setup process. This was tricky as you needed to know the exact name of the metric and tags.

We've now shipped an easy autocomplete to the metrics and tags fields, along with suggestions for tag combinations. In combination with the graph preview, adding a new trigger is a piece of cake.

What To Use Triggers For?

If you are new to AppSignal, or to our triggers, you might be wondering how triggers can help you. We know every application is unique, and so should your metrics and alerts be. Maybe your customer-facing app does not accept an error rate of over 0.1% while your internal app is fine with 0.5%? Triggers allow you to set alerts on all the metrics that are available within AppSignal.

Triggers out of the box

Without tracking any additional data, there's a whole list if triggers you can set up.

  • Error rate triggers
  • Error count
  • Throughput
  • Slow actions
  • Queue time
  • Host metrics (CPU, Disk, Memory, etc)

Custom metrics

When you start tracking custom metrics, the possibilities are endless. Here's some examples of things other AppSignal users set triggers on:

  • Completed vs incomplete downloads
  • Database replication lag
  • Number of active users
  • Number of user logins
  • Number of articles in an imported feed
